Neither Forward nor Back: Acting in the Present
Gudang Sarinah Ecosystem, Jakarta
15 November 2015 – 10 JanuarI 2016
Main Curator: Charles Esche (UK)
Curators: Anwar Rahman, Asep Topan, Benny Wicaksono, Irma Canthily, Riksa Afiaty (Indonesia)

The centering of the Indonesian art scenes in Java, especially in three cities only, namely Jakarta, Bandung, and Yogyakarta, made us see the importance of expanding the network of art practices and knowledge to various cities in other parts of the country. Involving curators and artists from several other cities was relevant in creating cross-border dialogue. It is hoped that the involvement of arts practitioners—curators, artists, communities—from various cities in Indonesia can present expressions and knowledge about local practices in diverse regions that can be offered to the public at large, in addition to opening up opportunities for sharing. Of course, JB also wanted to show the contemporary socio-cultural conditions in other regions in Indonesia through the artworks in this biennale.
