Galeri Saku is a collective founded in 2020 by students of the Faculty of Visual Art of the Jakarta Institute of Arts (FSR IKJ). The idea to found it emerged during the global pandemic in 2019 when almost all social activities all over the world shifted online. Learning spaces and student presentations, including for visual art students, also moved online. As a result, they became accustomed to presenting their ideas in virtual spaces, which over the past decade have become increasingly accessible through mobile phones—devices often kept in pockets, saku. It is this accessibility to space that became the basis for naming the collective. Currently, Galeri Saku focuses on collaborating with emerging artists from Jakarta and experimenting with nooks and crannies, spaces generally not used for exhibitions in Jakarta.
