TROTOARt

TrotoART was born from the initiative of a group of street painters who “set up shop” on one of the streets in Kota Tua, Jakarta, in 1989. The idea to form an artist group sparked in 2001 when Jhons Patriark Karlah and his friends wanted to share their experiences and knowledge as artists with the residents of Penjaringan, North Jakarta, which has become their base to this day. When the Trotoar Semesta Raya Foundation was established, TrotoART expanded its artistic work to more areas in West Java and Central Java. Some of their initiatives include Sehat Bersama TrotoART (Get Healthy with TrotoART) and Bermartabat Bersama TrotoART (Be Dignified with TrotoART), which are held weekly, quarterly, semi-annually, and annually. In addition to the programs, TrotoART runs an independent business unit, Katro Management, under which they operate and manage various business ventures such as a coffee shop (Katro Kopi), a repair shop (Katro Vespa), a music studio (Katro Studio), a punk band (Katro Musik), and more. “Katro” is an adjective that refers to qualities like “ugly,” “trash,” “unsophisticated,” or “marginal.” TrotoART uses this term to name their positive programs aimed at changing the general perception of “katro.” Katro Management also runs community programs such as fitness classes for mothers in Penjaringan, mobile cinema, workshops for children under the Penjaringan toll road, public music festivals, and mass circumcision ceremonies, all funded collectively by both the residents and members of TrotoART. These activities were temporarily halted during the pandemic five years ago.
